One issue this talk ignores is the acceleration of information technologies, notably solar, at a rate sufficient to meet or exceed increased world demand for energy. While it’s true that a geologist may have more insightful opinions on hydrocarbons, an electrical engineer may have certain advantages in thinking about solar. Indeed, there are some scientists who claim that solar power will be cost competitive with coal in as soon as 5 years:

I think the truth may lie somewhere in between these two extremes.

I was at a local farm over the weekend that generated all of its energy from solar panels. The solar panel array was quite small relative to the size of the farm. Impressive.
